Ilha da Culatra

Ilha da Culatra is a charming inhabited barrier island in the Ria Formosa lagoon, accessible by ferry from Faro. It features two distinct beach communities — Culatra and Farol — offering relaxed, authentic fishing village atmospheres alongside excellent sandy beaches with calm, clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling.

Ilha da Culatra is one of the barrier islands forming the Ria Formosa Natural Park and is home to two small, traditional fishing communities: the village of Culatra and the lighthouse settlement of Farol. The island is reached by a regular ferry service departing from Faro's harbour, with the journey taking around 45 minutes. Unlike Ilha Deserta, Culatra has a resident population and a lived-in, authentic character that distinguishes it from more tourist-oriented beach destinations. The beaches on the ocean-facing side of the island are wide, sandy, and relatively uncrowded, with clear Atlantic waters excellent for swimming. The Farol end of the island is particularly popular for its picturesque lighthouse and excellent seafood restaurants. The island offers a genuine glimpse into traditional Algarvian coastal life alongside a beautiful natural beach setting, making it a rewarding and slightly off-the-beaten-path excursion from Faro.
