Finding work is challenging as you need a work permit to work in Austria. Additionally, the working language is German. So it is vital that one speaks it.

How did you obtain your work permit? What advice would you have for others about work permits?

I work for an International Organization in Vienna and I my employer has provided me with a temporary residence permit for Austria.

Have you taken language and cross-cultural training courses to prepare for your assignment? If so, how have they helped you on the job?

Yes, I did a language course in German the first year I arrived in Austria. This will help you when making hotel reservations, appointments to visit your doctor, shopping and dealing with the local population. Your colleagues may not necessarily speak the local language and one can assist the non-German speakers when the need arises.

If you were transferred abroad by your employer, were you guaranteed a job upon repatriation? What type of mentoring programs does your employer offer?

If I was transferred abroad, I will have to work in one of the branches located overseas. We have offices in New York, Geneva, Japan and Toronto.

It's stated in my contract that I must be prepared to work wherever my employer sends me.

What advice would you offer others about finding jobs and working abroad?

First, it is important that one speaks the language of the country - so I would say learn German.

Secondly, check the internet for job opportunities that are in line with your qualifications.

Thirdly, find an employer with an open mind who is looking for what you have to offer and is willing to apply for an Austrian work permit.
