First jobs for expats here are usually in call centers if you have not transferred in with an expat company. Working in a call center will get you some experience culturally and help you find the lay of the land so to speak. I do resume reviews all the time and can give you a realistic assessment of your skills and earning potential.

I am a business consultant. I have done contracts in a variety of industries including tourism, transportation, resorts, call centers, IT, recruiting and placement work. I also serve on the boards of 3 charities.

How did you obtain your work permit? What advice would you have for others about work permits?

You can either get residencia or a work visa. The process can be a bit daunting but the government is cracking down on illegal expats.

Have you taken language and cross-cultural training courses to prepare for your assignment? If so, how have they helped you on the job?

Nope, I learned on the fly.

What advice would you offer others about finding jobs and working abroad?

Network, network network. Come down here with a minimum of 6 months living expenses and the cost of residencia. Most employers will not hire you if you are not legal first.
