An Expat Talks about What is Was Like Having a Baby in Antofagasta, Chile

What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?

Antofagasta

How recently did you give birth in the country that you are reporting on?

2006

Describe your experience giving birth there. What type of facility did you go to? What (if any) type of pain management did you use? How long did you stay in the hospital? Was it a positive experience? Etc...

I had my baby in a women's clinic and had no medications. I prefer to go natural, but everybody thought I was crazy. Absolutely no complications. Everything was clean. Stayed in the hospital 24 hrs after the baby was born.

How did you choose your doctor, midwife or other type of medical professional?

My dr. was a friend from church. He speaks great English, which was important to me. He is also very good at what he does.

If you were to have another child in this country, would you do anything differently in terms of preparation and/or the delivery?

I would switch to a different clinic, but other than that I'd keep the same dr. & everything.

If a friend of yours living in the same country were expecting a baby, what advice would you give her?

Be demanding if necessary. YOU are the one having a baby. The baby is YOURS. Make a birthing plan and share it with your dr., midwife, husband, everyone. Do what you believe is best.
