Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Belize.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Belize.

Requirements for a Foreigner to Drive in Belize

A foreigner can legally drive in Belize with a valid driver's license from their home country for a certain period. However, if their stay exceeds this period, they must obtain a local driver's license. The rules are consistent nationwide, with no variations based on the city, state, or region.

Driving with a Foreign License

Foreigners can use their valid home country driver's license for up to three months in Belize. After this period, they must acquire a local driver's license to continue driving legally in the country.

Obtaining a Belizean Driver's License

The process for a foreigner to obtain a Belizean driver's license is as follows:

  • Validity Check: Ensure your current foreign driver's license is valid and not expired.
  • Visit the Belize Transport Department: Go to the nearest office of the Belize Transport Department.
  • Application Form: Complete the application form for a Belizean driver's license.
  • Document Submission: Submit the following documents:
    • Valid passport and a copy of the photo page
    • Valid foreign driver's license and a copy
    • Proof of residence in Belize (e.g., utility bill, rental agreement)
    • Two passport-sized photographs
    • Medical certificate from a registered medical practitioner in Belize
  • Payment: Pay the required fees for processing the driver's license application.
  • Driving Test: Depending on the regulations at the time, you may need to take a practical driving test and/or a written exam.
  • Issuance: Upon successful completion of the process, you will be issued a Belizean driver's license.

Renewal and Validity

Belizean driver's licenses are typically valid for a specified number of years, after which they must be renewed. Renewal requires a similar process to the initial application, including document submission and fee payment.

Additional Information

It is advisable to check with the Belize Transport Department for the most current requirements and procedures, as regulations can change.
