Summary: Here's a primer on how to get your driver's license in Spain.

Sometimes when you're new to a country a task like getting your driver's license can make you feel like you're 16 years old again trying to pass your driver's test. Here's an overview of the process of getting your driver's license in Spain.

Requirements for Foreigners to Drive in Spain

Foreigners from European Union (EU) or European Economic Area (EEA) countries can use their national driver's licenses without any time limits in Spain. However, non-EU/EEA citizens can use their foreign driver's licenses for only six months after entering Spain. After this period, they must obtain a Spanish driver's license.

The requirements do not differ based on the city, state, or region within Spain.

Process for Obtaining a Spanish Driver's License

  • Register at your local town hall (Empadronamiento): Before you can apply for a Spanish driver's license, you must be registered as a resident in your local town hall.

  • Obtain a medical certificate (Certificado Médico): Visit a recognized medical center to obtain a certificate confirming you are fit to drive. This usually involves a simple vision and reflex test.

  • Apply for the driver's license: Go to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters (Jefatura Provincial de Tráfico) with the following documents:

    • Application form
    • Passport and residence permit (original and photocopy)
    • Medical certificate
    • Two recent passport-sized photographs
    • Declaration that your existing license is valid, if applicable
  • Take the theoretical exam: After your application is processed, you will need to pass a theoretical exam on Spanish traffic rules and regulations. This test is usually in Spanish, although some provinces offer it in English.

  • Practical exam: After passing the theoretical exam, you will need to pass a practical driving test. You can take lessons at a recognized driving school to prepare for this test.

  • Receive your license: Once you have passed both exams, you will be issued your Spanish driver's license.

Driving schools (autoescuelas) can provide assistance and guidance throughout this process.
