Driving in Sunshine Coast

Driving in a new country can be daunting. These tips offer insight into what to expect when driving in Sunshine Coast.

1. Understanding Australian Driving Rules

Driving in Australia is on the left-hand side of the road, which can be a significant adjustment for those from countries where driving is on the right. It’s crucial to familiarize yourself with Australian road rules, signs, and signals before getting behind the wheel. Speed limits are strictly enforced, and penalties for drunk driving are severe.

2. Choosing the Right Car

Most cars in Australia are automatic, but if you’re comfortable with a manual transmission, you might find a wider range of options. The type of car you choose will depend on your needs. If you plan to explore the hinterland or go camping, a 4WD might be a good choice. For city driving, a smaller, fuel-efficient car would be more suitable.

3. Parking in Sunshine Coast

Parking in Sunshine Coast is generally not a problem, especially compared to larger cities like Sydney or Melbourne. There are plenty of free parking spaces available, particularly in shopping centres and beach areas. However, during peak tourist season, finding a parking spot can be more challenging.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in Queensland (where Sunshine Coast is located) with a valid international driver’s license for up to three months. After that, you will need to obtain a Queensland driver’s license. It’s also important to carry your passport or other identification documents when driving.

5. Obtaining a Queensland Driver’s License

If you hold a driver’s license from certain countries, you can simply transfer your license to a Queensland license. If your country is not on the list, you will need to pass a written road rules test and a practical driving test. You can find more information on the Queensland Government’s Department of Transport and Main Roads website.

6. Be Aware of Local Wildlife

One unique aspect of driving in Australia is the presence of wildlife on the roads, particularly in rural and semi-rural areas. Kangaroos, for example, can be a hazard, especially at dawn and dusk when they are most active. Always drive with caution and be prepared for animals on the road.
