1. Understanding the Driving Culture

Driving in Arnhem, like most of the Netherlands, is generally safe and orderly. The Dutch are known for their strict adherence to traffic rules and regulations. However, be aware that bicycles are a major mode of transport in the Netherlands, and cyclists often have their own lanes and traffic signals. Always be vigilant for cyclists, especially when turning.

2. Car Recommendation

Compact cars are recommended for driving in Arnhem due to the narrow streets and limited parking spaces. Electric cars are also popular in the Netherlands due to the country’s commitment to sustainability. There are plenty of charging stations around the city.

3. Parking in Arnhem

Finding parking in Arnhem can be challenging, especially in the city center. Most parking spaces are paid, and the cost can add up quickly. It’s advisable to use public transportation or bicycles for daily commuting and save the car for longer trips or heavy shopping.

4. Driving with an International License

Foreigners can drive in the Netherlands with an international driving license for up to 185 days. After this period, you will need to obtain a Dutch driving license. If you have a driving license from an EU or EEA country, you can use it in the Netherlands until it expires.

5. Obtaining a Dutch Driving License

To get a Dutch driving license, you need to pass a theory test and a practical driving test. The tests are usually in Dutch, but some driving schools offer lessons and tests in English. If your current driving license is from a non-EU or non-EEA country, you may need to take a driving test even if you have been driving for many years.

6. Be Aware of the Weather

The Netherlands is known for its rainy weather. Make sure you’re comfortable driving in wet conditions. In winter, roads can be icy or snowy, so winter tires are recommended.

7. Use of Navigation Systems

Arnhem, like many Dutch cities, has a lot of one-way streets and can be confusing for newcomers. A good navigation system is essential to help you find your way around.
