Summary: Plan a day trip or weekend getaway to get some holiday cheer. This article highlights the best places to visit in Finland for Christmas cheer.

Finland, with its snowy landscapes and festive traditions, offers a magical setting for expats and digital nomads looking to immerse themselves in the holiday spirit. December in Finland is a time of enchanting Christmas markets, unique local traditions, and cozy atmospheres that light up the long winter nights. From the northern reaches of Lapland to the bustling cities in the south, here are some of the best places to visit for a truly Finnish Christmas experience.

Helsinki's Senate Square

The heart of Finland's capital transforms into a winter wonderland with the Helsinki Christmas Market, known as Tuomaan Markkinat. Set in the historic Senate Square, this market is usually open from early to late December and features rows of vendors selling Finnish handicrafts, seasonal treats, and warm glögi (mulled wine). The atmosphere is enhanced by the beautiful Helsinki Cathedral as a backdrop, and there's often a carousel to add to the festive fun.

We Recommend: Don't miss the chance to try the traditional Finnish Christmas pastries, such as joulutorttu (Christmas tarts) filled with plum jam, and the warm, spiced glögi, which often comes with almonds and raisins.

Rovaniemi, Lapland

Rovaniemi is known as the official hometown of Santa Claus and is a dream destination for those seeking the ultimate Christmas experience. Santa Claus Village is open year-round but is particularly special in December when the Arctic Circle is covered in snow and the Northern Lights dance overhead. Visitors can meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle line, and enjoy reindeer sleigh rides. The Santa Claus Post Office is also a must-visit, where you can send postcards with a special Arctic Circle postmark.

We Recommend: Make sure to send a letter from Santa Claus' official post office, and indulge in some sautéed reindeer, a local delicacy, at one of the village's cozy restaurants.

Turku's Old Great Square

Turku, the former capital of Finland, hosts a traditional Christmas Market in the Old Great Square. This market typically runs on the weekends during Advent and features a range of artisan products and festive foods. The historical setting, with old wooden houses and the Turku Cathedral, adds to the charm. The market also coincides with the declaration of the Christmas Peace, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, which is broadcast nationwide on Christmas Eve.

We Recommend: Experience the historical Christmas Peace declaration and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream and a pinch of cinnamon.

Tampere's Central Square

Tampere's Christmas Market in the Central Square is a delightful spot for holiday shopping and savoring seasonal treats. The market is typically adorned with lights and Christmas decorations, creating a cozy atmosphere. Vendors sell everything from Finnish design items to traditional Christmas delicacies. There's often entertainment, including music and dance performances, adding to the festive mood.

We Recommend: Try the gingerbread cookies and the Finnish Christmas specialty, riisipuuro (rice porridge), which is often served with a spiced fruit sauce.

Porvoo's Old Town

The picturesque town of Porvoo, with its cobblestone streets and wooden houses, is especially charming during the holiday season. The Old Town is adorned with Christmas lights and decorations, and the Christmas market here offers a selection of handcrafted gifts and seasonal treats. The historic atmosphere of Porvoo, combined with the festive stalls, makes for a perfect day trip from Helsinki.

We Recommend: Enjoy a leisurely walk through the Old Town's narrow streets and stop by a local café to sample a slice of Piparkakku, Finnish gingerbread, alongside a warm cup of coffee.

Oulu's Market Square

Oulu, in Northern Finland, hosts a lively Christmas market in its Market Square. The market features a variety of stalls selling local handicrafts, Christmas decorations, and Finnish delicacies. The city's location by the sea and the snowy surroundings contribute to a unique holiday atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy ice skating and other winter activities in the area.

We Recommend: Be sure to taste the korvapuusti, a Finnish cinnamon roll, perfect for a cold December day, and explore the nearby ice sculptures.

Levi, Lapland

Levi is Finland's famous ski resort town and offers a festive experience with its snowy slopes and winter activities. During December, the town is beautifully lit, and visitors can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and husky safaris. While Levi doesn't have a traditional Christmas market, its restaurants and bars offer a warm refuge with seasonal menus and drinks.

We Recommend: After a day on the slopes, unwind in one of Levi's traditional saunas, followed by a hearty meal of local Lappish cuisine at a nearby restaurant.

Kakslauttanen, Lapland

For a unique holiday experience, visit Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort in Lapland, where you can stay in a glass igloo and watch the Northern Lights from the comfort of your bed. The resort offers a true winter wonderland experience with snow-covered landscapes and the opportunity to visit Santa's home. While not a traditional market or festival, the resort embodies the spirit of Christmas with its enchanting setting.

We Recommend: Book a night in a glass igloo for an unforgettable experience of sleeping under the Arctic sky, and don't miss the chance to go on a reindeer-led sleigh ride through the snowy forest.
