Summary: As you plan your move to Vietnam, a key decision awaits: selecting the right health insurance. Should you go with local or expat coverage? This article explores the options and includes experiences shared by expats in Vietnam, offering a glimpse into what might work best for you.

Vietnam offers a mix of public and private healthcare services, with a health insurance system that has seen significant improvements over time. For expats and digital nomads, understanding the health insurance landscape is crucial for accessing quality medical care.

Health Insurance Companies in Vietnam

Several health insurance companies operate in Vietnam, offering a range of services. Some of the most popular health insurers include Bao Viet, PVI, and Bao Minh. Bao Viet is the largest insurer in the country, offering comprehensive health insurance plans. PVI is another major player, providing a wide range of insurance services, including health insurance. Bao Minh is known for its diverse insurance products, including health insurance. Expats are eligible to purchase health insurance from these companies, given they meet the application requirements.

Expat Health Insurance in Vietnam

Many expats living in Vietnam opt for specialized expat health insurance plans. These plans are designed to provide international coverage and benefits tailored to the needs of expats. Some reasons why expats choose these plans include the ease of use across multiple countries, the convenience of having English-speaking customer service, and the flexibility to include benefits such as medical evacuation and repatriation.

Local Health Insurance vs. Expat Health Insurance

The choice between local health insurance and specialized expat health insurance depends on individual preferences and circumstances. Expats and digital nomads may use local health insurance companies if they plan to stay in Vietnam long-term and want more affordable options. However, many opt for specialized expat health insurance providers due to the broader international coverage, higher limits, and additional benefits like evacuation services.

Considerations When Choosing Health Insurance Overseas

When deciding on health insurance while living overseas, several factors should be considered. One crucial aspect is understanding the billing process. Some insurers offer direct billing, where they pay the hospital directly, while others require you to pay upfront and submit claims for reimbursement. Other considerations include the extent of coverage, the network of healthcare providers, and the policy's flexibility in case you move to another country.

Expats talk about Health Insurance in Vietnam

"Cigna is expensive for us simply, because when we go to the USA we are not covered. So, we get a travel insurance and pay out of pocket for most heavy expenses. For example, I had to be hospitalized on a visit home and I didn't even reach the 5K deductible. It's frustrating. I get reimbursed for other expenses that I incur for example, dental emergencies etc. I am reconsidering how to deal with this situation in the next year," commented one expat living in Da Nang, Vietnam.
