Summary: Is health insurance a requirement when you are moving to Vietnam? This article explores health insurance requirements for newcomers to Vietnam.

When planning a move to Vietnam as an expat or digital nomad, understanding the health insurance requirements is crucial. Vietnam does not have a specific health insurance requirement for visitors or those seeking residency, unlike some other countries. However, it is strongly recommended to have health insurance that covers you during your initial period in the country. While Vietnam does have a public healthcare system, it is generally advisable for newcomers to have private health insurance that covers medical emergencies, hospitalization, and potential medical evacuation.

Does Expat Health Insurance Meet the Requirements?

Expat health insurance plans typically meet the recommendations for coverage in Vietnam. These plans usually offer comprehensive coverage, including medical emergencies, hospitalization, outpatient care, and evacuation benefits. Ensure that your plan covers Vietnam specifically and provides adequate coverage limits, preferably at least $500,000 for medical emergencies and $1,000,000 for evacuation.

Which Local Health Insurers Offer This Type of Insurance?

Several local health insurers in Vietnam offer plans suitable for expats and digital nomads. Companies like Bao Viet, PVI, and AIA are among the popular choices. Bao Viet offers a range of health insurance products, including international health insurance plans that cater to expats. PVI provides various health insurance packages, some of which are designed for foreigners living in Vietnam. AIA offers comprehensive health insurance plans that include coverage for hospitalization, outpatient care, and emergency medical evacuation.

Advice from Expats in Vietnam about Health Insurance

Expats in Vietnam often advise newcomers to carefully consider their health insurance options before arriving. It's essential to ensure that your chosen plan covers pre-existing conditions if applicable, and provides coverage in both private and public hospitals. Additionally, look for plans that offer direct billing services to avoid upfront payment of medical costs. Consider plans that include coverage for medical evacuation, as this can be crucial in case of serious illness or injury. Always review the fine print of your policy to understand the exclusions and limitations. Lastly, consider seeking recommendations from fellow expats who have firsthand experience with healthcare and insurance in Vietnam.

Expats Talk about Health Insurance in Vietnam

"Cigna is expensive for us simply, because when we go to the USA we are not covered. So, we get a travel insurance and pay out of pocket for most heavy expenses. For example, I had to be hospitalized on a visit home and I didn't even reach the 5K deductible. It's frustrating. I get reimbursed for other expenses that I incur for example, dental emergencies etc. I am reconsidering how to deal with this situation in the next year," said one expat who moved to Da Nang, Vietnam.
