Summary: Living abroad as an expat comes with its own set of challenges and stressors. Being familiar with the mental healthcare support services available in Norway is important.

Moving to a new country can be an exciting yet challenging experience, and it's important to be aware of the mental health services available in your new home. Norway, known for its high standard of living, also offers a range of mental health services. However, understanding the system and cultural attitudes can help expats and digital nomads navigate their mental health journey more effectively.

Finding a Mental Health Care Provider in Norway

Finding an English-speaking mental health care provider in Norway is possible, especially in urban areas like Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim. Many professionals in both public and private sectors speak English fluently. However, it may be more challenging in rural areas. The Norwegian health system offers a website (helsenorge.no) with a list of health professionals, and you can filter by those who speak English.

Similarities in Mental Health Care Services

The mental health care services provided in Norway are generally similar to those in English-speaking nations. Norway has a public system that covers mental health services, including consultations with psychologists and psychiatrists. However, the specific therapies and medications offered may vary. Private mental health services also exist and may offer more tailored or specialized care.

Standard of Care for Mood Disorders

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is widely recognized and used in Norway for treating anxiety, depression, and other mood disorders. It is often considered the first-line treatment, along with medication when necessary. Other therapeutic approaches, such as psychodynamic therapy and interpersonal therapy, are also available.

Online Mental Health Services in Norway

Expats and nomads may favor using online mental health services due to their flexibility and convenience. Norway has robust internet infrastructure, making online services accessible. However, there may be technological barriers, such as ensuring a stable internet connection in rural areas. Additionally, not all health professionals may offer online services, and there might be regulations regarding telemedicine practice.

Important Considerations for Mental Health Care in Norway

Expats and nomads should be aware of the cultural attitudes towards mental health in Norway. While the country is progressive in many ways, mental health stigma still exists. Open conversations about mental health are becoming more common, but there may still be a reluctance to seek help. Additionally, the Norwegian healthcare system can have long wait times for non-urgent mental health services. It’s crucial to register with a general practitioner (GP) who can refer you to specialized care when needed.
