Summary: Get ready to move to Spain with your pets. This guide provides key information on vaccinations, what you can bring to Spain, travel tips, and more, helping to avoid problems when you relocate with your pet.

Moving to Spain with a pet involves some careful planning and understanding of the country's regulations. Spain is generally pet-friendly, but there are specific vaccination and paperwork requirements you must follow. Unlike some countries, Spain does not typically require quarantine for pets upon arrival. However, it is uncommon to see pets in certain public spaces, as some establishments may have restrictions. Let's dive into the details to help you navigate this process smoothly.

Can I bring my dog to Spain?

Yes, Spain allows the import of dogs. However, they must meet specific health and documentation criteria. This includes having a valid rabies vaccination and undergoing certain treatments, such as tapeworm treatment for dogs, within a specific timeframe before entering Spain.

Can I bring my cat to Spain?

Yes, cats are also permitted entry into Spain. Similar to dogs, cats must have a valid rabies vaccination. While tapeworm treatment is not required for cats, they must meet other health criteria and have the necessary documentation in place before travel.

Pets that are Prohibited from Coming into Spain

Certain breeds of dogs are prohibited from entering Spain, namely those considered potentially dangerous. These breeds include Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, Dogo Argentinos, Fila Brasileiros, Tosa Inus, and Akita Inus. Additionally, the import of certain exotic pets, such as some reptiles, birds, and mammals, may be restricted or prohibited.

How do I bring my pet to Spain?

To bring your pet to Spain, you must obtain a health certificate from an accredited veterinarian within 10 days of travel. This certificate must be endorsed by the official government agency in your home country. Pets must be microchipped and have a valid rabies vaccination administered at least 21 days before travel. Dogs must also receive tapeworm treatment 1-5 days before entry. All documentation should be presented upon arrival in Spain. Make sure to check with your airline regarding their specific policies for pet travel.

Upon Arriving in Spain

Once you and your pet have safely arrived in Spain, it is recommended to register your pet with the local town hall (Ayuntamiento) to obtain any necessary licenses. Finding a veterinarian is straightforward, as there are many clinics throughout the country. Spaniards generally like dogs and cats, but there are rules to follow, such as keeping dogs on a leash in public areas. Dog parks are becoming more common in Spain, especially in larger cities. Always be mindful of local regulations and respect the spaces where pets are not allowed. By understanding and following these guidelines, you and your pet can enjoy a smooth transition to life in Spain.
