What is the name of your child's school? (Please report on one school per survey.)
Dubai American Academy
In what town or city is this school located?
How would you describe this school? (i.e. American, British, International, Local, etc.)
American with the IB program integrated.
What grade levels are represented at this school?
How do most children get to school everyday? (bus, train, walk, etc.)
There is a reliable bus service, but many parents choose to drive their children to school. Trains do not exist in Dubai, and walking is impossible due to the summer heat and the distance.
How would you describe the facilities at this school? What extra-curricular activities are available?
Facilities include 2 pools, 400m track, 2 grass feilds, 3 sand pits, numerous computer labs, and many more.
There are a number of exta cirricular activies, ranging from elementary activities that stretch little minds, to middle and high school activities that involve competetions internally (in the UAE) as well as in the entire community of American schools in the Middle East.
What has this school done to help your child transition from the curriculum in your home
country into the curriculum in your new country? Are there programs to prepare your child for repatriation?
The members of this school are mostly extremely accepting and used to cultural diffusion. There are almost no cases to racism, which is usually a major issue in international schools. Friends are easily made and teachers are availible for extra help most of the time.
How would you describe the social activities available for parents through this school? Are there parent-teacher organizations?
There is a parents association named DAAPA. (Dubai American Academy Parents association)
There are three major events by this organization in a year: A Fall Festival, A International Food Festival, and one more that has slipped my mind, unfortunately. DAAPA meets regularly and it is a good place for parents to make friends as they can talk about the school.
What advice would you give to someone considering enrolling their child in this school?
Go right ahead! The atmosphere is amazingly warm.
