Good afternoon Raven0013,

I will be retiring soon (middle to end of 2016) (Army) and will be relocating to Santo Domingo, My wife is Dominican and we are currently having our place built. I have gone back and forth to the DR for going on 20 years. Though I am not a Viet Nam vet, rest assured I have seen every conflict since, or so it seems. (I missed Kosovo). I was curious as to how many Military folks have retired there. I know many Americans are in the north, but just unsure as to the numbers in the capital. A support group may be a good venting place to get together and shoot the breeze about the good and bad stories of our lives, so not a bad idea in my book.

Curious as to your process so far on the actual relocating procedures and moving experience if you have some time to chat, as I am just now gathering data on what I need to do. (Schools ,2 kids) Health insurance ie Tricare...and such.

Good Vet hunting and may this bring best of luck to you and your friend.

Hi, sorry I didn't write earlier but got tied up. According to a Medical Clinic that takes care of Veterans, there is around 10,000 veterans living in the DR, And the clinic in Santiago has 300 vets using it ,They have offfices in Santo Domingo and Puerta Plata with about the same numbers using them.

The local Veteran guy can often be seen at the Cuban bar in Sosua. He has a sticker on his car. Very helpful guy. Also, there is a restaurant on Sosua beach run by a vet who was planning to attract more veterans to his bar/rest . I will try and get the name this weekend and get back to you

Thanks Raven it is good to know I will not be alone. I am a Army veteran and I am moving to the Dr April 11 well at least I'm come try it out. decided to go to Sousa I've heard so much about it

Hi and thanks for your answer, when I first came to the DR last September on a look see trip I checked out Sousa and it's a nice town but I didn't like all the tourists that go there plus things cost more there that's why I elected to go to Cabrera, which is a small Spanish town of about 30,000 people,it's nice and quiet but close enough to Sousa and Cabarete I could drive there in under an hour if I want a busy night life. You can go on YouTube and check out both Sousa and Cabrera and you will see the difference between the two locations Either way Welcome to the DR and if you need any help my number is 829-606-8583 will be glad to answer any questions. Also ther is a clinic her that will help you with any VA Health problems, their email address is www.mlvadr.com, have a great day, take care and God Bless.

I know this is an old thread but thought I'd jump in. I'm retired USAF considering a move to DR. We have a few more working years before making the leap but I'm starting to gather info and plan. We will def be looking up fellow vets and expats to get some REAL feedback and not B.S. My hope is that I can find someone trustworthy that we can meetup with on a future trip to DR and hear their experiences, show us around, etc.
