Hello... i am a digital nomad and i am thinking of coming to bulgaria for an extended period of time (perhaps permanantly...) can someone tell me if I would have access to the public health care system there? (providing there is one... hahaha) and how "easy" can i get insulin? is it over the counter, or do i need a drs prescription? how much is a consult with a doctor? anyone have any idea about how much glargine insulin would cost out of pocket? or any advice from other diabetics??? Thanks!!!!

"can someone tell me if I would have access to the public health care system there?"

Not for the first five years you are here. You will only get access to the public health care system in Bulgaria if you have acquired one of the following:

? a permit for permanent residency (A permit for permanent residency is granted only after you have lived in Bulgaria for five years under a "continued stay" permit.)

? Bulgarian citizenship (Bulgarian citizenship is conferred only if the applicant has been continuously resident in this country for ten years. There are other requirements, too.)

EXCEPTIONS: If you have an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), issued by one of the other member countries of the European Union, doors might be opened to you. And if you are the victim of a trauma, you will be given free care at the Emergency Care facility of any public hospital.

"how much is a consult with a doctor?"

I paid 25€ for a very brief (in and out in ten minutes) and basic consultation at a private clinic recently.

The last time I bought health insurance here it cost me a little less than €200 for a year's coverage.

I don't know what it covered and for how much. (I bought it because the Migration office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs said I had to have it.) I never submitted a claim because the health care here is so cheap that it wasn't worth the effort.

It was a special policy, designed for foreigners seeking long-term residency in Bulgaria. There's usually a cluster of insurance brokers in the vicinity of any Migratsia office. They also do translations and will even fill out your Migratsia forms on an ancient typewriter. If you're young enough never to have seen a typist in action, you'll find it fascinating to watch.

Indeed.I attempted to buy a policy but that are extremely expensive as Cigna,Aetna etc.I was unable to reach Bulgarian insurance companies simply because they never responded. On the base of my own experience and info posted I made a determination that at this time Bulgaria is not a great place for exp anymore. In the little town USA cost of living can be the same but standard much higher.

Just out of curiosity, what little town in the U.S. would have a cost of living comparable to Bulgaria? I might eventually have to move back there.

On the subject of diabetes..Type 2 in particular. I was in Canada 3 years ago with my wife visiting our daughter and family. One day we were out shopping and suddenly I could not form my words properly...straight round to hospital emergency! You have had a T.I.A.... a minii heart attack...a serious 'tap on the shoulder to review your health!) Then the Docs came back with the resuts of their test...Blood pressure sky high AND sugar too...You have Type 2 Diabetes with readings way off the scale! Now this wasn't a huge shock to me as some years previously at my Annual Pilot's Medical Exam the Doc had found it.. But it wasn't doing anything as far as I could see and being ignorant of the risks I did NOTHING and so this eventually happened. This Doc told me I would be on Metformin for the rest of my life and sent me off with a prescription...Meanwhile, at home back in Bulgaria I began to feel I was living in a fog..that it wasn't me anymore...That's when my wife made the decision to research alternatives from Nature. Then the tough moment...keep the pills or go with her herbal remedy recipes! Screw it lets do it! Days later I was out of the mental cloud and back to being ME...a month later the close monitor of BS Level readings we took daily showed they were back within normal parameters...and still are...Thanks to my wife and the wonderful Bulgarian herblife I no longer have Type 2! Want our lifestyle change recipies? Send a PM...meanwhile on BG health services... the Tokuda Hospital in Sofia is amazing. My wife was in for a week with serious asthma...they discovered that for YEARS she had been misdiagnosed in the UK...and now she has never felt better...Thank God For Tokuda Hospital!!
