An Open Message to "SUPERPATRIOTA"

Hello Superpatriota,

I, as I'm sure most of the ex-pats in this community, do not like the vitriol you have expounded on a number of occasions through this medium and to our particular e-mails.

I think you need to know that we, of free choice, came to reside in Chile because we really do love the country and its people. We are not flotsam or desperate refugees from, primarily, the United States; neither are we “poor and old farts running away from a cesspool” to quote your contemptuous prose.

Most people who belong to this Chile Expat Community Forum are college educated, many with post graduate degrees, while others are ex-entrepreneurs that were considered either middle, middle-middle or high middle class citizens by USA standards. What we bring to the country is the hard currency we spend here every day from the countries we came from; additionally, we are not a public burden to the Chilean government or its agencies as we have suitable incomes.

As history has shown, countries become enriched by the influx of well-educated people from all over and of different cultures. This influx of people adds to the whole and makes for a dynamic, vibrant nation with varying viewpoints and juxtapositions on most every level.

So, your remarks towards this community are superfluous and without merit.

Many family and friends asked why we chose to retire in Chile having the means and wherewithal to retire in just about any country we please. We reply with a simple statement I used at a formal gathering we once had at the Herradura Club de Yates a while ago:

“The Chilean national treasury is not in the Banco Central in Santiago, but is instead, in the kind hearts of every Chilean man, woman and child you meet on the street across the country.”

Please Superpatriota, don’t blemish the Chilean national character that we have come to respect and love by bitterness and sarcasm.

And in case this may be interpreted erroneously, here it is in Castilian. . . .

Hola Superpatriota,
