Hello, I'm interested in renting 1/1 apartment with my husband either in Santiago or Valparaiso for a few months, starting from NEXT march. I know I have some time to look for it but I'd like to know reliable sources and renting agents. I also would like to know tips on renting unit, things to do and NOT to do etc...
Any suggestions and tips are greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Hi Travelseeker,
No matter how much I have searched, and read on forums, I still had some surprises here in Santiago. Mostly unpleasant ones. Because I wanted so much to like this place that I have ignored info. For example everybody talked about how long it takes to get visa temporaria and the fact that you need to stay in line for long time. There are other, more important, things about visa, that nobody mentioned, and until I have discovered Extranjeria (www.extranjeria.gob.cl) I was not really aware of what I can do.
Regarding renting an apartment, it was impossible for us to get a real estate agent to respond to us while we were in the USA. On the forum they said that if you do not have a bank account at a bank in Chile, they do not rent to you. That, and a friend/sponsor to vouch for you.
The truth is that, here in Santiago, you can rent in one of the new buildings paying with a USA credit card in advance for 8 months.
Level Euro (http://www.leveleuro.cl/nuestros-edificios/ is one of such company that build huge edificios with 20 floors and 20 apartments per floor. Brand new, clean, nice, safe. They do not have a refrigerator, nor a laundry machine (but offers connections for it) and no space for a dryer. People use the balcony for drying, but there is a laundry/drying room in the building for common use. There is no heating also, you will have to buy an electrical heater (they are cheap).
Also the rooms are very small, by American standards, but you get used to it.
I hope this helps.

Thank you very much for that indepth and honest information, it helps to know this and I really appreciate the response to our inquiries. I will take a look at the website: extranjeria.gob.cl as you've suggested. I hope to hear more from your point of view

Thanks Knowing567 for this information. Very helpful. Any idea if these newer buildings permit pets? We have three - two small dogs and a cat, and that is our only (but rather major) hiccough for the transition from the US to Chile.

Renting an apartment is always tricky no matter the country, but now we have AirBnB, it is a good way to contact landlords and get a better price for a longer stay while you explore the area.

My best place to search is
https://www.goplaceit.com
You can define an area of interest and they will notify you when new properties become available.

Regarding pets, we moved to Chile with Maximvs a 140 pounds Neapolitan Mastiff we flew Copa he had to come in LAN, the cargo door was too small for his kennel :/
We used the one registered agent for pets in Chile:
http://www.interfamily.cl/
It was 7 years ago, but I guess their service is still good.

There are plenty of places that would accept pets and the number is increasing, you only need one.

However I would never move with a pet to Santiago, they need space and air!

Best

Walter

Knowing567,
Thank you for the information. I've heard that Air BnB offers reasonable rentals. Have you heard anything about this?

Sincerely,
TravelSeeker

Hi Walter. Thanks for the additional information.

I wanted to get clarification on the pets needing space and air. Ours are all small (under 12 lbs) and we are bringing a friend, so everyone will have a place under the airline seat (along with plenty of sleepy time stuff).

Or are you saying Santiago's air is bad for pets?
