taxes on belongings-question

Hello! I have a question about moving belongings to Costa Rica. We plan to bring as little as possible, & I was trying to clarify some things I have read/heard. Used household items & appliances are taxed much less than new items, correct? How do you prove that the appliances & so forth you are bringing are used & not new? I believe I read they need to be at least 6 months old. For some things I have kept receipts, but others I do not have receipts. Any advice would be appreciated! We plan to bring certain tools & appliances from home, since we have been told that some items such as these are difficult to find or are very expensive.
