Mortgage Qualifying?

I'm single and planning on a Pensionado Visa... However, I will be renting until I find what I'm looking for. That said... I am not a wealthy gringo... just my pension. What is required to buy a small house? Do they use credit scores etc?? What kind of downpayment should I expect and what are interest rates and mortgage lengths typically?

I have no need or deep desire to own....but if something crosses my path that I fall in love with, I'd just like to know if it's even feasible.

...if it's too difficult, then I'll keep renting :-)
