do blood tests need physician referral?

Since moving here to the land of Pura Vida I have become very active and excising daily, losing lots of excess weight and fat. So much so that I am able to cut back dramatically on my blood pressure medication.

I would also like to get off my cholesterol meds, but don't want to be reckless about it. There are many medical labs in my area. Do I need a prescription of physician referral to get blood drawn for a cholesterol test?
