Hi all expats, we will be driving from Arenal to Monteverde. Which is the best way to go? Southeast along the lake then over to Monteverde OR north along the lake, around and down?

Google Maps shows three routes all within minutes of each other "la Fortuna to Monteverde" . It's been a while for me but I'm told it's still one of the most challenging drives in the country, don't drive at night.

I drove it about 15 years ago, going counter-clockwise around the lake. The dirt road going in the last 20 miles took 2 hours. It was like driving on ball bearings. The adventure was good fun, we still talk about on occasion.

Recently, friends lamented on the horrible conditions of the most direct route to Monteverde from San Jose. Be certain you are renting a 4x4 vehicle. This blog post might help prepare you for what to expect:

As an aside we just got back from driving from San Jose to Arenal, spending a couple of nights at the Arenal Observatory Lodge which is amazing (goggle it lots of history). Tons of brightly colored birds of every variety (which they attract by feeding them fruit), and much wildlife, great trails much nicer then the actual park has plus you are up on the side of the volcano and it was venting quite a bit of steam and gas. Amazing sight! If you can't spend a night at least stop in for lunch or just a glass of wine at a great lodge bar.
