Medicare

I have a hernia and hoping to use laparoscopic operation in the U.S. to get rid of it. I'm on Medicare, but have never used it yet. If I go back to the states and have a doctor prescribe an operation, is there a way of knowing how long it will take before I can actually have the surgery performed? For budget purposes, I'd rather not fly back to the states, get a doctor's appointment, fly back home here in CR, then go back to the states for the operation. It may be all up to the doctor, I just don't know.
