I am 64 yrs old, male, hoping to retire in 2 years. Considering CR after retirement. I will be in Costa Rica for two weeks in June. What are the best Volunteer Opportunities in CR during this time? Are there any that will help me learn Spanish? What other should I do to determine if CR is for me after retirement.

Don't make any major decision until after your trip.

Most volunteer opportunities usually require payment for room & board, and since it take time to train new recruits, I don't think that this will be viable during a 2 weeks stay. The exception is the groups that care for former street dogs.

Thank you. The site involving assisting endangered species was very informative and I will look into the pursuit of helping with such efforts.

As you will see in watching other questions, the advice is to visit and rent, visit and rent, etc. The country is so diverse from one coast to the other and even lots of variation in the Central Valley, I believe. Believe the average rate of making complete transition to residency is about 50%. First sage words we heard were, "Life here is simple but it is not easy!"

Thank you,

SanJuan;

I will take your advice to heart. What I hear you saying is to take it slow, don't go out and purchase property, and see how it goes. I would guess there are good deals to be had by renting. May need some guidance concerning renting.

But thanks for the words of wisdom. Feel free to pour on more.
