Expat Meet-Up Places for a gringo that used to be a hippie, traveled to corp world, that just wants to live local

Hey folks, Well, this will be my 1st in CR, like soooo many others. My itinerary is San Jose 7/31 - 8/3, MalPais 8/3 - 8/6, Matapalo 8/6 - 8/8, Dominical 8/8 - 8/13, Uvita 8/8 - 8/13, San Jose 8/13 - 8/14.
Wondering if expats have nice coffee shops, bakeries, restaurants that are regular meeting places? Nope, didn't forget bars, just don't drink. But that doesn't mean I can't meet there...
My kids want me to get settled real quick so they've got a vacation destination. However, this trip is just a fact finding mission for me to see where I might be comfortable to winter. Then over winter I'd have more time to really figure some things out.
BTW, I really like the comments about saying hello to someone and finding yourself in a couple hour conversation!
