Stolen items from luggage Lan Miami to Quito

So I'm not entirely sure how luggage inspection works, but we keep discovering items missing from our flight here a few months ago. We flew into Quito, I can only guess that they were the thieves.

But, what I am wondering is how many of you have had items stolen when flying into Ecuador. Just curious if we are an anomaly or is theft typical.
