One interesting aspect of expat life is that in the past Ecuador has had a type of old west feel to the country. Ask some of the old timers and they are sure to share with you stories of knowing of Americans and others from different countries that have lurid pasts, settling in Ecuador.
However, with the advent of the internet and improved policing, it is much more difficult for an expat to hide out in Ecuador and to evade detection.
An American was arrested in Ecuador recently who is wanted in the United States for drug trafficking and is an xcon. The fellow has used at least eight aliases. Maybe someone here has met him - maybe he is among the users on this forum. No way to know. If I was wanted or an xcon the last thing I would do is mix with expats.
Ecuador is still in the infancy stage of attracting expats in large numbers compared to Panama and Costa Rica. Time will usually start to weed out the few and especially those who are hiding from a past.
Vigilance should be practiced in developing new relationships with Ecuadorians and expats from your home country. Dont fall prey to a false familiarity with those from your own country because they speak English or appear to be completely normal. Places such as Ecuador can attract a number of white collar offenders.
