I am in the process of getting a 6 months business visa for Ecuador in Bangkok. It has been a long process so far but the end may be near.
The Thai lady in the Ecuador office in Bangkok now tells me, via email, that she is now waiting for further news from the Embassy of Ecuador in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for any new procedure to issue the 6 months visa.
She also wants a travel itinerary from me. I am doing an exploratory trip from Thailand to Ecuador to see about possibly relocating. Flight itinerary would depend on having the visa. I will start airline bookings after I obtain the visa.
My question is:
Is a visa good for one year with actually 6 months in country during that one year?
I would like to obtain the visa first and then book airfares.
If during the first 3 months I decide to stay I would apply for residency. That is the only reason for getting the 6 months visa so I can open up bank accounts and have the required clearance from the Royal Thai Police, (required due to having been in Thailand more than a year) stamped by their Ministry of foreign affairs and translated by the Ecuador Embassy. Incredible, but I did get all that done in only 3 trips to Bangkok during the past month.
My reason(s) for wanting to explore the EC option are: close to the USA, Climate changes at different elevations and a fervent desire to learn Spanish as well as South America being the only continent I have not lived in. Except Antarctica that I have no desire to ever set foot on.
