What is the real El Salvador

I am trying to pin down a picture of El Salvador. I have heard that it’s name of “Valle de Hamacas”; land of many volcanoes; crimes ran rampant; security awareness is an obsession… It is also a land of incredible beauty, with some of largest Convention Center and malls in the region.

Then there are reports of gang setting buses on fire when extorting fees are not paid; services for supplying running water are undependable — some days you may have running water for a few hours, and then days can go by without any water services. The water is said to be undrinkable — so I guess there are bottle-water service? Kitchen sink is a modern introduction, and dishwasher / washing machine / dryer are rare in most houses.

Certain reports tout El Salvador as a Mecca for the cosmetic surgeries and dental implants medical tourist industry; yet, the hospital(s) are rated as disappointing; bad, to poor. The one report that really gets my attention is the advice about putting away one’s toothbrush when not in use because “deadly toxic fume from the sink” can be trapped in it. Phew, that’s intense!
