Hello, Uruguayos!

I intend to move to South America for semi-retirement in about the next 6 months. I have narrowed my choice down to 2 countries: Uruguay and Ecuador. I have acquaintances in Ecuador, but know no one in Uruguay that I can get some really accurate info from. My Social Security will be just under $1200 a month, and I expect to earn about $500-600 a month in the beginning from an online enterprise I have just begun. As I have studied everything I could find on the internet and elsewhere for the last 2 or 3 years about Ecuador and Uruguay, I was immediately drawn to Uruguay as it appears to be a more first world country, and not as much a "developing" country as Ecuador. I like the weather in the sierra of Ecuador, but I need to be sure of having really reliable internet, utilities that are stable, and the ability to choose a small town over a larger city. I need some up-to-date information on the availability of furnished rentals, as I do not intend to ship my household. I require a small space, one or possibly 2 bedrooms, an apartment or "casita". I also enjoy traveling and would need to be in a quiet safe place where I can lock and leave my place with the expectation that it won't be burglarized while I'm away. That is one of my biggest concerns about Ecuador. A number of burglaries have occurred in so-called gated or guarded communities of mostly gringos. I do not want to live in "gringolandia" as I believe that makes one a target, and doesn't give the opportunity to live with locals. Does anyone on this forum have any idea if the kind of accommodation I'm inquiring about is available in the Costa de Oro? If so, what would be an average rental price for small and furnished?

Thank you for any help you can offer.
