Deciding Where to Live in Tanzania

When we asked expats living in Tanzania to offer newcomers advice about choosing a neighborhood and finding a home, they replied:

"After moving here you can post what you are looking for in a house on the Arusha Mail Out email service, that sends an email to most expats and companies in Arusha, you pay 10,000 tzs at Meat King, downtown Arusha. Or you can find a real estate agent that You drive around to show you houses," said one expat living in Arusha, Tanzania.

What Expats Appreciate about Their New Culture

We asked expats in Tanzania what they appreciated about their new culture. Here's what they had to say:

"Some levels of respect for the elderly. The greetings rituals. The mostly, warm, friendly and demonstrative nature of the locals," said one expat living in Moshi, Tanzania.

The Most Challenging Aspects of Living in Tanzania

Then, we asked expats in Tanzania what was most challenging about their new culture. They replied:

"There is a certain 'Wild West frontier', every-man-for-himself attitude in most local people that is sometimes masked by their friendliness," said one expat living in Moshi, Tanzania.

"slow down and accept what we all say here: "this is africa" and "inch allah" these two sentences says everything," mentioned another expat in Tanzania.

"To communicate. I noticed that even if the words often were there, it was common to talk past each other, when it came to other things than just basics," commented one expat who made the move to Tanzania.

"Learning to be more patient; having things not happen as quickly as I am used to," remarked another expat living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
