What do I need to know before moving to Ambergris Caye?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ambergris Caye, they said:
"Ambergris Caye is a popular destination for expats due to its beautiful beaches, warm climate, and friendly locals. Before moving there, it's important to know that English is the official language, making it easier for English-speaking expats to communicate and integrate. The cost of living can be high, especially in areas popular with tourists and expats, so it's crucial to budget accordingly. The local currency is the Belize Dollar, but US dollars are widely accepted. Healthcare facilities on the island are limited, so for serious medical conditions, you may need to travel to Belize City or even outside the country. It's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance that covers medical evacuation. The island has a relaxed, laid-back lifestyle which can be a significant change if you're used to a fast-paced city life. The weather is tropical, meaning it's hot and humid year-round, with a rainy season from June to November. While Ambergris Caye is generally safe, like any place, it has some crime. It's advised to take standard precautions to protect your personal safety and belongings. Getting around the island is typically done by golf cart, bicycle, or on foot, as there are very few cars. Importing a vehicle can be expensive and complicated due to import duties and regulations. Finally, while Belize has a relatively straightforward process for obtaining residency, it's essential to understand the legal requirements and procedures before making the move. It's recommended to consult with a local attorney or immigration expert," remarked one expat who made the move to Ambergris Caye.
