What do I need to know before moving to Schoelcher?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Schoelcher, they said:

"Expats moving to Schoelcher should know that the official language is French, so it would be beneficial to learn the language or brush up on their French skills. The currency used is the Euro, and the cost of living can be quite high compared to other Caribbean islands. Schoelcher is a town on the Caribbean island of Martinique, which is an overseas region of France. Therefore, the culture, laws, and administrative procedures are very similar to those in mainland France. The climate in Schoelcher is tropical, with a rainy season from June to October and a dry season from November to May. It's important to be prepared for hurricanes, which can occur between June and November. Healthcare in Martinique is of a high standard, but it's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. The island is generally safe, but like any place, it's important to take standard precautions against petty crime. Public transportation is available, but many expats choose to rent or buy a car for more convenience. Driving is on the right side of the road. The cuisine in Martinique is a blend of French, Caribbean, and African influences. Seafood is very popular, and so are Creole dishes. Expats should also be aware that while Martinique is a popular tourist destination, English is not widely spoken outside of the major hotels and tourist areas. Finally, it's important to note that while Schoelcher and Martinique offer beautiful beaches and landscapes, expats should also be prepared for island-specific challenges such as humidity, insects, and limited shopping options," replied a member in Schoelcher.
