What do I need to know before moving to Orchard Road?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Orchard Road, they said:

"Orchard Road in Singapore is known for its shopping, dining, and entertainment options, making it a vibrant and bustling area to live in. Before moving, expats should be aware that the cost of living can be quite high, especially when it comes to housing. Apartments and condos in this area are typically upscale and come with a hefty price tag. Public transportation is readily available, with the Orchard MRT station providing easy access to other parts of the city. However, owning a car can be expensive due to high taxes and fees. English is widely spoken in Singapore, but it can be beneficial to learn some basic phrases in Mandarin or Malay. The climate is tropical, meaning it's hot and humid year-round, with frequent rain showers. Singapore has strict laws and regulations, including penalties for littering, jaywalking, and chewing gum in public places. It's important to familiarize yourself with these rules to avoid fines or other penalties. Healthcare in Singapore is of a high standard, but it can be expensive. It's recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. The food scene in Orchard Road is diverse, with a mix of high-end restaurants and affordable hawker centres. Lastly, Singapore's education system is one of the best in the world. There are several international schools around Orchard Road, but securing a spot can be competitive, so it's advisable to start the application process early," wrote one member in Orchard Road.
