What do I need to know about living in Al Qunfudhah?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Al Qunfudhah, they said:

"Before retiring in Al Qunfudhah, expats should be aware of the local culture and customs. Saudi Arabia is a conservative country with strict laws based on Islamic principles. It is important to respect these customs and laws to avoid any legal issues. Expats should also be aware of the climate in Al Qunfudhah. The city has a hot desert climate with high temperatures throughout the year. It is important to take necessary precautions to stay hydrated and protect oneself from the sun. Language can be a barrier for expats in Al Qunfudhah as Arabic is the official language. While English is widely spoken in business circles, it may not be commonly used in daily life. Therefore, learning basic Arabic phrases can be beneficial. Healthcare in Saudi Arabia is of a high standard, but it is advisable for expats to have comprehensive health insurance. Public healthcare is mainly for Saudi nationals, and while private healthcare is available, it can be expensive. The cost of living in Al Qunfudhah is relatively lower compared to other major cities in Saudi Arabia. However, expats should be aware that the Saudi government has introduced a cost of living allowance and a value-added tax, which can affect the overall cost of living. Saudi Arabia has strict laws regarding alcohol and drugs. Alcohol is completely banned and possession, consumption or trafficking of drugs is a serious crime with severe punishments. Expats should also be aware that Saudi Arabia has strict dress codes, especially for women. Women are expected to wear an abaya (a loose-fitting black cloak) in public. Lastly, it's important to note that the process of getting a visa and residency permit in Saudi Arabia can be complex and time-consuming. It's advisable to seek professional advice or assistance when dealing with immigration matters," wrote a member in Al Qunfudhah.
