What advice do overseas retirees have for others considering retiring abroad?

"Retirees in Koh Chang, advise others considering retiring abroad to thoroughly research the cost of living in their chosen destination, as it can vary greatly from their home country. They suggest learning about the local culture and customs to better integrate into the community. It's also important to understand the healthcare system and ensure you have adequate coverage. They recommend visiting the location multiple times before making a final decision, to get a feel for the lifestyle and environment. They also suggest learning the local language, at least at a basic level, to help with daily interactions. It's also crucial to consider the climate and how it may affect your health and lifestyle. Lastly, they advise maintaining a flexible attitude, as living in a new country can present unexpected challenges and opportunities," explained one retiree living in Koh Chang.

What are the most challenging aspects of retiring in Koh Chang?

"One of the most challenging aspects of retiring in Koh Chang is the language barrier. Most locals speak Thai, and while some may understand English, communication can still be difficult. Another challenge is the difference in culture and customs. It may take time to understand and adapt to the local way of life, which can be vastly different from Western cultures. The tropical climate, while appealing to some, can also be a challenge. The heat and humidity can be intense, particularly during the hot season, and may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with certain health conditions. Access to healthcare can also be a concern. While there are local clinics and a hospital on the island, more serious medical conditions may require travel to the mainland or even to Bangkok, which can be inconvenient and costly. The cost of living, while generally lower than in Western countries, can also be a challenge depending on one's retirement income. Prices for goods and services aimed at tourists can be higher than in less touristy areas. Finally, dealing with Thai bureaucracy can be challenging, particularly when it comes to obtaining and renewing a retirement visa. The process can be complex and time-consuming, and may require the assistance of a lawyer or agent," explained a retiree in Koh Chang.

What do I need to know before retiring in Koh Chang?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Koh Chang, they said:

"Expats considering retirement in Koh Chang, should be aware of several important factors. Firstly, they should understand the visa requirements, which typically involve obtaining a retirement visa that needs to be renewed annually. They should also be aware that Thailand has a high cost of living compared to other Southeast Asian countries, although it is still lower than in many Western countries. Healthcare in Thailand is generally of a high standard, but it is recommended to have comprehensive health insurance. Expats should also be aware that while English is widely spoken in tourist areas, it is less common in rural areas, so learning some basic Thai could be beneficial. Koh Chang has a tropical climate, with a rainy season that lasts from May to October. Expats should be prepared for this, as well as for the high humidity levels. The island is less developed than other parts of Thailand, which can be a draw for some but may mean fewer amenities for others. Expats should also be aware of the cultural differences and local customs. Thai people place a high value on respect and politeness, and it is important to be aware of this in daily interactions. Additionally, the country has strict laws regarding the monarchy, which should be respected at all times. Finally, it's important to note that while Koh Chang is a beautiful and peaceful place, it may not offer the same level of social activities or entertainment as larger cities. Therefore, it's important for expats to consider their lifestyle and what they want from their retirement before making the move," explained a retiree in Koh Chang.
