The pace of life is slow, allowing retirees to enjoy their days without the hustle and bustle of a big city. There is a small but active expat community in La Paloma. Many retirees from Europe and North America have chosen to settle here, attracted by the low cost of living and the natural beauty of the area. The expat community is welcoming and supportive, often organizing social events and activities. Cultural attractions in and around La Paloma include the historic lighthouse, which offers panoramic views of the town and the ocean. There are also several art galleries and craft markets where local artists display their work. The nearby city of Rocha has a number of museums and historical sites. Recreational activities are plentiful in La Paloma. The town is known for its excellent surfing conditions, and there are several surf schools for those who want to learn.
