Summary: The cost of living in Hong Kong, Hong Kong is generally high. A nice 1 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $4,000 USD per month, while a nice 2 bedroom apartment can cost anywhere from $3,000 to $6,000 USD per month. Dinner at a moderately priced restaurant can cost anywhere from $15 to $30 USD per person.

We asked people how much they someone comfortably live on in Hong Kong, they wrote:

"The cost of living in Hong Kong is generally high, with rent and food being particularly expensive. Prices for basic necessities such as groceries, transportation, and utilities are also high. The cost of entertainment and leisure activities can also be quite expensive, especially in the more popular tourist areas. Despite the high cost of living, Hong Kong remains an attractive destination for many due to its vibrant culture, excellent infrastructure, and world-class amenities," remarked one in Hong Kong.

Will I save money living in Hong Kong?

"Living in Hong Kong can be significantly cheaper than living in the United States. The cost of living in Hong Kong is generally lower than in the US, with rent, food, and transportation being much more affordable. Additionally, Hong Kong has a lower tax rate than the US, which can help to reduce overall living costs. Furthermore, the cost of goods and services in Hong Kong is generally lower than in the US, making it a great place to save money," said one person in Hong Kong.

What is the average cost of housing in Hong Kong?

If you are thinking about moving to Hong Kong, cost of living in probably a key consideration. Expats commented about the cost of housing:

"25.000 HKD/mth for 800 sqft in a 20 year old buliding in walking distance to subway (MTR) station in New Territories," explained one expat.

"Housing costs are astronomically higher in HK than in the USA. I can't really say what the average cost is, as there is a large range depending on the neighborhood and size of the apartment. But it is much higher even than, for example, NYC. Most companies will subsidize housing, at least partially, even if you are a local hire," said one person in Hong Kong.

We asked foreigners in Hong Kong what appliances are typically included in a rental, and, if there is anything else included or not included that a newcomer would not expect. Replies included:

"In Hong Kong, rental properties typically include a refrigerator, washing machine, air conditioner, and stove. Some properties may also include a microwave, dishwasher, and water heater," said one expat living in Hong Kong.
