What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Colombo?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Colombo about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"1. Make sure to research the best hospitals and doctors in the area to ensure you have the best care for your baby. 2. Consider hiring a doula or midwife to provide additional support during the pregnancy and delivery. 3. Familiarize yourself with the local laws and regulations regarding birth registration and citizenship. 4. Take advantage of the many resources available to expats in Colombo, such as support groups and online forums. 5. Be prepared for cultural differences in the way childbirth is handled in Sri Lanka. 6. Make sure to have a plan in place for postpartum care, including childcare and medical care. 7. Take time to explore the city and get to know the local culture and customs. 8. Have a support system in place to help you adjust to life as a new parent in a foreign country," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
"I would not hesitate to recommend staying in country to deliver. My only caveat would be if it is a high risk pregnancy as there were only five preemie bassinets in the city and they were at a different hospital. This may have changed by now and my guess is that if there were any doubt your doctor would be the first to recommend you leave," commented one expat who made the move to Colombo, Sri Lanka.
