What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Maldonado?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Maldonado about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Uruguay. The country has a high standard of healthcare, with both public and private options available. However, private healthcare is recommended for expats for its higher quality of service and shorter waiting times. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Check if your insurance plan covers prenatal care, childbirth, and postnatal care. If not, you may need to purchase additional coverage or pay out of pocket. Find a good obstetrician and hospital for the delivery. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. It's also advisable to visit the hospital beforehand to familiarize yourself with the facilities and procedures. Learn some basic Spanish if you don't already speak it. While many doctors and nurses in Uruguay speak English, not all medical staff do. Being able to communicate in Spanish will make your experience smoother and less stressful. Consider hiring a doula or midwife. They can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Prepare all the necessary documents for your baby's birth certificate and passport. As an expat, you'll need to register your baby's birth with both the local authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate. Lastly, be aware of the cultural differences. Uruguayans have a relaxed attitude towards time, which can be frustrating for expats used to punctuality. Be patient and flexible, and try to embrace the local culture," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Maldonado, Uruguay.
