What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Santa Marta?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Santa Marta about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Colombia. The country has a high standard of healthcare, particularly in larger cities, and many doctors and nurses speak English. However, it's always a good idea to learn some basic Spanish medical terms. Secondly, ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Check if your policy covers prenatal and postnatal care, childbirth, and any unforeseen complications. Thirdly, choose a hospital or birthing center that suits your needs and preferences. Santa Marta has several reputable hospitals with maternity wards. It's advisable to visit a few to get a feel for the facilities and staff. Fourthly, consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any language or cultural barriers. Fifthly, be aware of the local customs and practices around childbirth. In Colombia, it's common for the father to be present during the birth, and immediate family often visits soon after the baby is born. Lastly, make sure you understand the process for registering the birth and obtaining a passport for your baby. As an expat, there may be additional paperwork to complete for your home country. It's advisable to contact your embassy or consulate for guidance. Remember, every pregnancy and birth is unique. It's important to communicate your wishes and concerns with your healthcare provider, and to seek support from other expats who have had similar experiences," explained one expat living in Santa Marta, Colombia.
