What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Hastings?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Hastings about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Barbados. The country has a good standard of healthcare, with both public and private hospitals. However, private healthcare can be expensive, so ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Secondly, prenatal care is essential for the health of both the mother and the baby. Regular check-ups with a trusted obstetrician or midwife are recommended. Barbados has several well-qualified and experienced obstetricians, so you should be able to find one you're comfortable with. Thirdly, consider where you want to give birth. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown is the main public hospital in Barbados and has a maternity ward. There are also private hospitals and clinics in Hastings and other areas of Barbados that offer maternity services. Fourthly, it's important to plan for the birth. This includes deciding who you want to be present, what kind of birth you want (natural, C-section, etc.), and what pain relief options you want to be available. Discuss these decisions with your healthcare provider. Fifthly, make sure you understand the legal requirements for registering the birth in Barbados. This usually involves obtaining a birth certificate from the hospital and then registering the birth with the local registry office. Lastly, consider joining a support group for expat parents or new mothers. This can be a great way to share experiences, get advice, and make new friends. There are several such groups in Barbados, some of which are specifically for expats," remarked another expat who made the move to Hastings, Barbados.
