What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Isla Taboga?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Isla Taboga about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Panama. While the country has a good standard of healthcare, facilities on Isla Taboga may be limited, so you may need to travel to the mainland for regular check-ups and for the birth itself. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Check the terms of your policy carefully to make sure it covers all aspects of pregnancy and childbirth, including any potential complications. Find a reliable and trustworthy doctor who speaks your language. Communication is key when it comes to healthcare, so it's important that you can understand and be understood by your healthcare provider. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help you navigate the healthcare system and advocate for your needs. Prepare for the possibility of a C-section. The rate of cesarean deliveries is quite high in Panama, so discuss this with your doctor and make sure you're comfortable with their approach to childbirth. Make sure you're up to date with all necessary vaccinations, both for yourself and for the baby once it's born. Panama has specific vaccination requirements that may differ from your home country. Finally, connect with other expats who have had babies in Panama. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific doctors or hospitals," commented one expat who made the move to Isla Taboga, Panama.
