What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Sokcho. They wrote...
"Expats in Sokcho often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English and the local dialect can be difficult to understand. The cultural norms and etiquette, such as bowing and removing shoes indoors, can also be difficult to get used to. The food can be a challenge for some, as Korean cuisine is quite different from Western food and can be very spicy. The work culture in Korea is also very intense, with long hours and high expectations, which can be stressful for expats. Additionally, the concept of personal space is different in Korea, which can be uncomfortable for some foreigners. Lastly, the lack of diversity and the homogeneous nature of the society can make some expats feel isolated or out of place," wrote a member who made the move to Sokcho, Korea.
