What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Tongyeong. They wrote...
"Expats in Tongyeong, often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as not everyone speaks English and the local dialect can be difficult to understand. The cultural norms and etiquette, such as bowing and removing shoes indoors, can also be confusing and hard to remember for foreigners. The food can be a challenge for some, as Korean cuisine is quite different from Western food, and includes many spicy and fermented dishes. The work culture in Korea is also very demanding, with long hours and high expectations, which can be stressful for expats. Lastly, the lack of diversity and the homogeneous nature of the society can make some expats feel isolated or out of place," wrote a member who made the move to Tongyeong, Korea.
