So What About the Drive from Quito to Manta?

I really hate to be a pest, but...We just realized that we can fly directly from Atlanta to Quito w/out changing planes.

What is the road like between Quito and Manta? I'm trying to get over my need to be a total gringa who must have her own car but dang, the thought of being stuck on a bus instead of stopping any old place we want to rubs me wrong.
