Ecuador Scouting Trip with Kids

Hi, my husband and I are looking to relocate to Ecuador some time in the next year along with our two young children (9 months and 3 years). We would like to come and scout out potential cities we are interested in living in (mainly Cuenca, Canoa/Bahia, La Liberated, Salinas). Where is the best place to fly in to, and should we rent a car or take a bus? With young children, we are not sure what would be the best and safest options. We also are really hoping to connect with other expat families with young children to glean from their experiences and to help us decide where to live (cost of living, safety, schools, availability of organic food).
