Safety in Esmeraldas and Atacames

My husband and I have been living in Atacames for over 8 years. All of the negative info about Esmeraldas province is simply scare tactics. Last year, on the border with Colombia there were some serious incidents but we are a long way from the border. There are some very nice homes for sale one block from the beach where we live. We live on the beach itself but I do not recommend that as everything oxidizes! We have only been robbed once and it was because the electric fence was turned off that night due to painting. But, you must be careful, do not leave car out at night, etc. There is not an expat community here however, so if you do not speak Spanish and want to hang with expats, this is not the place for you. Good things, nice weather most of the time, beautiful beaches, great fish, coconuts, etc. quick flghts to Quito, calm lifestyle. I keep a small apt. in Tumbaco where I go for concerts, etc. about once a month. But, do not be afraid to come. I think Guayaquil area is much more dangerous.
