This Public Announcement is being issued to advise American citizens traveling to and residing in Paraguay of an outbreak of Dengue Fever. Americans traveling to Paraguay, particularly Asuncion, may wish to defer travel for the time being. This Public Announcement expires on June 16, 2007.

In January 2007, the Paraguayan Ministry of Public Health and Social Welfare declared an epidemiological alert for the entire nation in light of the number of confirmed Dengue Fever cases and the real possibility of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever cases. A small but growing number of the Dengue Fever cases since confirmed have resulted in fatalities.

On February 23, 2007, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued a Travelers Advisory stating that since mid-January 2007 there has been an ongoing Dengue Fever outbreak in Paraguay, South America. It also noted that the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has indicated 2007 could be a very active year for Dengue Fever activity in the Latin America region and that preventive measures are strongly urged.

Americans living or traveling in Paraguay are urged to register with the U.S. Embassy in Paraguay, where they can obtain updated information on the Dengue situation within the country. Update bulletins are e-mailed to all registered American citizens with an e-mail address. Registration is done online and can be done in advance of travel at Americans without Internet access may register directly with the U.S. Embassy in Paraguay. By registering, U.S. citizens make it easier for the Embassy to contact them in case of an emergency.
