An Expat Talks about Living in Hamilton, Canada
What is the name of the city or town that you are reporting on?
Hamilton
How long have you lived there?
16 years
What activities, clubs and organizations would you recommend to newcomers to help them meet others?
I would recommend newcomers to get involved in sport teams or in the arts (hamilton is very big on this). Try to become active in Hamilton's social life, too. There are always parties or other events going on for all sort of people with different interests. The four major malls in the city are Limeridge Mall, Eatgate Square, Centre Mall, and Jackson Square. There are always social things going on in one of these malls, for example Sentre Mall some years holds a back to school fashion show for children 3-15 years old. This is a great way for the kids and their parents to meet new people,

In terms of religious, racial, economic and cultural diversity, are the people of this city or town diverse? Are they accepting of differences? Describe.
hamilton is a very diverse community and i feel that everyone is accepting of these differences. places such as hess village (a few block on hess full of just hub/pubs godd night life atmosphere)there are people of all sort of laid back people from all drifferent races, ethnicality, and cultural differemce. there are also many cultural and religious groups where you could meet new people, for example on barton street "DOM CROATIIAN NATIONAL HOME" this is a croatian centre were croatians learn folklore and hold many of their banquets.
What are the main industries in this city? What types of career opportunities commonly exist? How do most people find new jobs?
The absolute main industry in Hamilton is in steel and the trades. Hamilton is also known as "steel city" and there are many career opportunities in this industry. You can find most of them in Stelco or Defasco.
In general, what are peoples' priorities in this city? For example, do lives revolve around work, family, socializing, sports, etc.?
For most of us, it is our work and families, socializing, and sports (of course) they have fairly good priorities. However, like some other cities/ towns/ communities, there are some people without very good priorities at all.

If a friend of yours was thinking of moving to this city or town from far away, what other advice would you give them.
I would tell that friend to stay away from the inner city which is Barton Street (more west), King Street (more west), Cannon, Wellington (lower), and Victoria (by General hospital), and all of those little side streets such as Burton Street. Stoney Creek is a good place to live. The people are friendly and well off.
